Worth It Wednesday Email
Principle
Uncertainty and insecurity don't have to be a package deal.
Over the past 2-3 years, I have been challenged to grow in one very specific way:
Walking through seasons of uncertainty without losing my sense of internal security.
This is a skill that does not come naturally to me.
When I encounter unpredictability, uncertainty, or upheaval in work or life, my natural tendency is to:
- Worry
- Get Angry
- Doubt Myself
- Question God
These internal states have external ramifications:
- Micro-managing
- Attempting to control the uncontrollable
- Shame-based overfunctioning
- Abandoning God's will to pursue my own
I am far from perfect but I have grown a great deal in this arena. And the growth all started with belief in one principle –
Uncertainty and insecurity don't have to be a package deal.
I had to learn that making my identity, effort, and internal state dependent on external stability was unhelpful.
I also had to learn that a new norm was possible.
Simply put – It's possible to be stable, secure, and centered even when everything around you is chaotic.
I think this is what Paul is talking about in Philippians 4:11 when he says:
"I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
There are so many practical ramifications of learning this rare but wildly valuable "secret".
But, for the purposes of this email, let's just remember this –
You can't lead through any chaos if you are owned by it.
